Join us in welcoming Derek Pizarro of AST Environmental
BIO: DEREK A. PIZARRO, CPG - Principal, Senior Product Manager
Mr. Pizarro has 22 years of experience in environmental remediation, specifically heavy metals remediation, fractured bedrock contaminant characterization, contaminant transport studies, and reagent bench-scale testing and design for industrial and environmental clients. He has a B.S. in Geology and Environmental Geosciences from Lafayette College and is a Certified Professional Geologist. Derek joined AST after serving as General Manager and Environmental Products Director for a chemical manufacturer, where he developed treatment chemistries for inorganic contaminants, AMD/ARD, and sediments, plus EISB and PRB additives.
TOPIC: Biodegredation of CVOCs and 1,4-Dioxane with Concurrent Sequestration of PFAS in a Large Commingled Plume
SUMMERY:
The primary objective is the reduction in mass, concentration, and mobility of chlorinated ethenes. Secondary and tertiary objectives are the sequestration of a portion of PFAS and the biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane.
Approaches/Activities. A proprietary mixture of virgin activated carbon impregnated with metallic iron, complex carbohydrates, yeast extract, and facultative bacteria, was injected to capture target compounds, enhance reductive dechlorination, and promote the biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane.
Results/Lessons Learned. Greater than 99.9% reduction in TCE was observed in both shallow and intermediate groundwater in less than 12 months. Source area accumulations of DCE isomers and VC are decreasing rapidly, and collateral sequestration results are promising for PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA, with average for all PFAS compounds greater than ~65% and declining.
Remediation performance monitoring continues after the completion of the injection program and includes chlorinated ethenes, PFAS, and 1,4-dioxane. Extensive pre-and post-injection modeling will be presented.
