Topic:

Title:  Overcoming VI Mitigation Design and Constructability Challenges – A Case Study on Improved Installation Efficiencies

Abstract:

The need to better protect overlying structures from sub-slab contaminant vapor migration continues to be at the forefront of vapor intrusion (VI) discussions across the nation. As VI guidance(s) continue to evolve and more is learned about the threat of the VI pathway, the number of impacted brownfield sites requiring VI mitigation continues to expand. Concurrently, the demand for large warehouse space has increased dramatically in the last five years and developers are looking to capitalize on the accelerated pace of the market, expanding into brownfield areas historically not considered for new construction.

Balancing stakeholder interests can be challenging when incorporating a pre-emptive vapor mitigation system. In addition, designing a vapor mitigation system that will not only satisfy regulatory requirements but also be installed efficiently during a fast-paced development project can difficult.

This case study will focus on the process of getting buy-in from all stakeholders (regulators, engineers, general contractor, and developer) to meet construction milestones and stay on time and budget in the face of COVID-19. By utilizing a construction friendly passive venting system and strategic planning for the vapor barrier installation, it allowed this development to be successful for all stakeholders.
