The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP), NEW THIS YEAR!

TCEQ; Texas | Published on 4/15/2021

The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP), administered by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2021. This milestone is significant because it signals the placement of almost 2,400 students who have launched their career via MLEIP; many of them are now in leadership and scientific/technical positions across the country. The MLEIP honors the work and legacy of former U.S. Congressman George “Mickey” Leland by providing college students with opportunities to learn from and network with industry leaders.

This year the MLEIP has received and vetted more than 500 applicants from college students looking for a paid summer internship.  As of now, nearly 100 students have been placed in summer internships with either the TCEQ or other public or private entities.  If you’re interested in hiring a summer intern, Juanita Baldwin, TCEQ Outreach Coordinator for the MLEIP will be work with you and/or your HR department.  The process is very easy.

Whether your organization has an established internship program or you simply hire one or two college interns in the summer, we can help by forwarding student applications to you at no charge! We’ve done the recruiting for you.  We simply request that you pay any candidates we refer whom you hire for your internship assignments. Most important, you’re in the driver’s seat- you interview and hire the candidate you choose for your internship; you determine hourly rate of pay; start and end dates of the internship; duties, etc.

NEW THIS YEAR- some of our sponsor companies are now hiring students for a micro-internship during the summer to work on a specific project for a few hours per week for a couple of weeks.
